New Arrival: from out of the Sole Bay Blue

Earlier this week I was delighted to take delivery of a bottle of Sole Bay Celebratory Beer, courtesy of the good folks at Adnams. It’s 750ml of 10% ABV Belgian-style ale with good carbonation (by which I’m guessing they mean it’s a ‘sparkling’ ale) which has been brewed to celebrate the 350th anniversary of Brewing by Adnams at Sole Bay.

Handsome devil it is, too, with it’s elegant livery and classy presentation tin:

Mind you, now I’m torn. The polite thing to do would be to sample it and post the Tasting Notes, tout-de-suite. But from the sounds of things, this one could be a bit on the sweet side and maybe a few months’ cellaring might help tone it down a bit? So maybe I should save it for a suitably celebratory occasion instead?

Only one thing to do, I reckon: sample it as soon as decently possible, then decide whether it’s the sort of beer that’s good to glug young or would definitely improve with age and (frankly, in either case) grab a couple more bottles from the Adnams webstore before the limited edition bottling runs out. Sounds like a plan to me.

I’ve not tried mine yet (thank you post to follow tonight) but I do know that it should be served chilled in champagne-style glasses.

Just make sure it’s had a few hours in the fridge first and open it when still really cold.

I’m really looking forward to trying this as I was lucky enough to try it as it was still being conditioned:

Chilled, sparkling ale, y’say. Hmmm. Had a bottle of Cooper’s Sparkling Ale straight from the fridge the other night and wasn’t hugely impressed…

Not that I’m saying this one won’t be far superior to the Cooper’s – I’m positively sure it will – but I am just a tad dubious about the whole chilling thing when it comes to strong ale.

I know – I’ll do half and half. Pour some to have one evening and then chill the rest, have it the day after. Compare and contrast, like :)

Tell them you need a second bottle.

It can stand chilling and I would suggest that you try it chilled first, you really need the carbonation and coldness to really enjoy it, plus if you love it cold you have the other 1/2…

Adnams Innovation [baron rating 5/5] is also a candidate for chilling, it’s full flavoured even straight from the fridge, it’s my favourite beer.

@ Beer Nut – Pretty sure if I want a second bottle of this one I’ll have to put my hand in my pocket for it :)

@ Baron – Yeah, but if I’m not so keen on having it cold I have to leave it out to get warm again. Ah, what the heck, I’ll take your advice – into the fridge it goes!
