I’ve already covered the Blonde and Dubbel offerings from Maredsous and now, thanks to the generosity of Phil over at beermerchants.com (thanks, Phil), I’ve been able to complete the set and sample the Tripel.
Pouring produces a rich orangey/copper coloured beer with a light and frothy but short-lived head. The aroma is light and fruity, slightly yeasty with a hint of oranges. The initial tasting is quite dry and with some sugary sweetness that doesn’t dominate, then citrus fruit and pepper notes, and ending in a dry and warming spicy finish. The alcohol content is certainly noticable but at no point does it overpower the flavours. One to savour, and one is quite enough. That’s by no means a negative comment, it’s a very fine beer but best appreciated in small doses.
So having now tried all three Maredsous beers, which is the one I’m most likely to go back to? The 8% Dubbel every time, but I’d pick up a couple of the Tripel if I saw it again.
