Mikkeller are one of those breweries with a justifiably high reputation whose beers that I’m always on the look-out for and I was delighted to get two varieties to sample in a rare Belgians mixed case that I ordered from Beermerchants.com a while back. One of them was Mikkeller Beer Geek Breakfast, which I thoroughly enjoyed (and have added my comments to Ed’s post there). The other was Mikkeller All Others Pale and again, it turned out to be a very fine brew indeed.

All Others Pale is billed as a pale ale, although it’s worth noting that in comparison with the majority of examples of the style available in the UK it’s actually quite dark in colour, pouring a rich, chestnut brown with a big, frothy head. The beer is a six percenter and although the alcohol is nicely muted, the beer still packs a definite punch in the flavour department, with plenty of toffee and caramel in amongst the strong malt notes. Having said that though, it’s not like All Others Pale was cloyingly sweet or sugary, with some hop-sharpness on the after-taste to keep things nicely balanced.

All in all an extremely drinkable strong ale. I supped two bottles quite happily and I’m extremely tempted to go back to Beermerchants.com and see if they’ve got any more…

I can’t keep up with Brewdog or Mikeller — too many new beers! If I tried them all, I’d never have time for any other breweries’ products. I wish they’d slow down just a bit so I could have a hope of keeping up.

This is very true. I was amazed at the range of Mikkeller beers last time I visited their website. And those BrewDog boys do keep putting out amazing beers time after time. I’d really like to try a few more of Thornbridge’s beers though. The trick is finding them on draught, which seems to be a case of being in the right place at the right time. Or moving next door to their new Bakewell brewery (believe me, I’m tempted).
