Tasting Notes: Hardy & Handons Olde Trip

Brewery: Hardy & Hanson’s (Greene King)
Origin: Bury St Edmonds, England
ABV: 4.3%
Version: 500ml bottle
Source: Sainsburys

Named after Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem pub, the oldest inn in England, which looks like a place I’ll have to visit if I’m ever in Nottingham.

A fairly well balanced bitter with malt flavours at the start and citrus hops following on. While not an exceptional ale it’s very refreshing and it’s easy drinking nature makes for a quaffable session beer. From what I’ve read the cask version is a different, and much better, beast so that gives me another reason to visit that pub.

Ed mate, I’d have to agree with you on “not an exceptional ale” – I tried the bottled version and it was one of the least interesting I’ve sampled for ages.

But, in the interests of fairness and further research, and seeing as I’m in Nottingham later this year for Fantasycon, I’d be quite happy to nip down the road to the Olde Trip and check it out on draught for you :)

Right then, as promised, I did my bit last weekend and nipped down to the Olde Trip to Jerusalem itself for a pint of Olde Trip on draught. Verdict: not bad. Much better than in bottled form, anyhow. Still not amazing, but definitely an improvement.

Where did you get this in bottles. I live in the US and would love to find it here.

Well, I got mine from my local supermarket. It’s definitely a UK beer, so I’m not sure whether you’d find an imported version.
