Video: ‘Master’s House’ by J. Tillman

I listened to J. Tillman’s 2008 album Vacilando Territory Blues after a recommendation on Spotify (finally, Spotify are doing proper cross-referencing recommendations, albeit via the Last.FM plugin, which requires an active Last.FM account, but still… suits me) and really liked what I heard.

Tillman’s music (on this album, at least) is reflective, melancholy, subtle yet deeply assured, mostly acoustic guitar and vocals, with minimal accompaniment on percussion and other instruments as the mood of the piece suggests. It slots him comfortably into the ‘Singer-Songwriter / Blues / Americana’ section of your music collection – alongside the likes of A. A. Bondy, Josh T. Pearson, Jason Isbell, Willem Maker, The Tallest Man on Earth and (personal favourite of mine) Joe Pug, plus many more, I’m sure.

This video, for ‘Master’s House’, a track from the aforementioned Vacilando Territory Blues, seems to be a decent representative taste of his style.

Oh, it also turns out (after a spot of research at allmusic.com) that J. (Josh) Tillman is the drummer in Fleet Foxes, when he’s not releasing his solo albums; a few more of which are waiting for me to track down and listen to on Spotify. Excellent.
